That framing is mostly wrong. These are two different magnesium compounds, studied for two different outcomes, and the actual research on each is more specific — and more interesting — than the trend format usually allows.

Researchers gave 155 adults with self-reported poor sleep either 250mg of elemental magnesium as bisglycinate or a placebo daily for at least four weeks.1 The magnesium group saw their Insomnia Severity Index score drop by 3.9 points, versus a 2.3-point drop in the placebo group (p=0.049) — a statistically significant difference, but a modest one; the researchers themselves described the effect size as small.
What this means for you: this is real evidence that magnesium glycinate can meaningfully help sleep quality for people with poor sleep, not a guarantee of dramatic results, and not evidence for people who already sleep well. The researchers also noted people with lower baseline dietary magnesium intake tended to see larger improvements — which tracks with a straightforward explanation: it's more likely to help if you were running low to begin with.
